Petitions regarding Mohegan Indians' lands in Connecticut, 1705-1706.

Copies of petitions, one written by Sir Henry Ashurst, on behalf of the Governor and Company of Connecticut regarding land grants to the Mohegan Indians of that colony. A dispute arose after Uncas, the Mohegan chief, deeded Indian country to the colony. A royal commission set up by Queen Anne decided in 1703 that Conn. should restore to the Mohegans the land that was theirs at the time of Uncas's death. These petitions attempted to appeal that decision and restore the lands to the colony. The decision was overturned in 1715, but did not end the dispute.
